A married Washington state teacher who pleaded guilty to having a sexual relationship with a 17-year-old student sent him money through Venmo during their illegal relationship, and investigators believe they know the disturbing reason why.

McKenna Kindred, a teacher at Central Valley High School in Washington state, became the subject of a police investigation after authorities uncovered her relationship with the student. The pair had allegedly exchanged explicit messages, photographs and videos before eventually having sex at Kindred's home while her husband was away on a hunting trip.

The teenager's mother, Ashley Beckley, told police she had noticed her son receiving what she described as "gas money through Venmo" from a teacher. She described it at the time as "kind of inappropriate" but said she did not initially know which teacher had sent the money or why. It was only after investigators began examining Kindred's relationship with her son that the payment took on a more disturbing significance.

The reason investigators believe the money was sent: it is alleged that Kindred paid the teenager to drive to her home so the pair could have sex while her husband was away, with the encounter reportedly lasting around three and a half hours.

The relationship had reportedly begun after the teenager discovered Kindred's Instagram account, with their interactions escalating into explicit territory before progressing to physical contact. Chilling text messages recovered by investigators revealed the extent of the relationship, including exchanges on school premises that suggested near misses with discovery.

"We almost got caught," one message allegedly read.

"I was sad when that student walked in when he did. I wanted you to hold me. I really like being touched by you," read another.

The messages eventually came to light after the student's friends grew suspicious. One friend reportedly confronted him directly, saying "Mrs. Kindred and you must be f**king because you are always in her room." Screenshots were shared with another teacher, who contacted Spokane Valley police.

Investigators also discovered messages suggesting Kindred had sent explicit photographs to the teenager and that he had sent explicit videos to her. The teenager's mother confirmed she had seen both.

Kindred was arrested and pleaded guilty to first-degree sexual misconduct in March 2024. She avoided prison, receiving two years of probation, a $700 fine and a ten-year sex offender registration. Three months after pleading guilty, she and her husband moved to Kuna, Idaho, where she voluntarily surrendered her teaching licence following an investigation by the Idaho Standards Commission.
