The parents at the centre of Ohio's so-called house of horrors case have been indicted on serious new charges as the investigation into the family widens, with prosecutors warning their work is far from over.

Elizabeth Siders, 33, and Gary Siders Jr., 37, were first arrested in June after authorities discovered 16 children living in deeply disturbing conditions at a property in Hamden, Ohio. Officials described the home as deplorable, with children allegedly confined to a 12ft by 12ft room for years in conditions lacking basic sanitation and containing human waste. Some of the younger children had limited speech, and the eldest was reportedly unable to spell her own name.

The couple were initially charged alongside Gary's parents, Gary Siders Sr. and Christina Siders, with child endangerment offences, to which not guilty pleas were entered on behalf of all four defendants. Elizabeth subsequently made a legal request for a mental health assessment to determine whether she was fit to stand trial.

Now, prosecutors have confirmed that Elizabeth and Gary Jr. are facing additional charges linked to alleged incidents involving a young relative that are said to have taken place between January and September 2022. Authorities confirmed the alleged victim is not an immediate member of the Siders family, though the precise relationship has not been disclosed. Officials stressed the cases involve interfamily relations and do not pose a risk to the general public.

Prosecutors revealed the wider investigation actually began in March following allegations of sexual abuse, with the discovery of the 16 children coming about as a direct result of search warrants served in connection with that case. They also noted that the case was initially flagged by staff at a local Dollar General store who called authorities with concerns about children they had observed.

Ohio Attorney General Andy Wilson was clear that more developments could follow. "These indictments are the latest developments in the ongoing investigations, but our work is far from complete," he said.

Gary Siders Sr. and Christina Siders have not been charged in connection with the sexual abuse allegations.
