A former New Jersey teacher, Allison Havemann-Niedrach, 45, has been sentenced to 12 years in prison after pleading guilty in January. The case, which involved a student at Freehold Intermediate School, was first flagged by school staff after a colleague raised concerns about her conduct toward the student, prompting an investigation.
What led to the sentencing
The case came to light after the school's vice principal reported concerns, following a report from another teacher. The victim's mother also raised concerns after noticing changes in her son's behaviour. Havemann-Niedrach pleaded guilty in January to the charges against her.
Statements in court
Both Havemann-Niedrach and the victim addressed the court before sentencing. The victim described the experience as deeply traumatic and said he hoped no one else would have to go through something similar, while also telling the court he forgave her. Havemann-Niedrach apologised for her actions and said she was moved by his statement.
State Superior Court Judge Jill G. O'Malley was direct in her remarks while delivering the sentence, telling Havemann-Niedrach she was responsible for lasting harm to the victim.
The consequences
Havemann-Niedrach must serve at least 85% of her sentence under the terms of her plea deal. She has been ordered to register as a sex offender, has had her teaching certification revoked, and is barred from contacting the victim or his family in future.
