A 41-year-old woman who went to hospital after experiencing unexplained symptoms was stunned when doctors revealed she was about to give birth, despite having no idea she was pregnant.

Sammy Evans had been living her normal life, attending gym sessions and looking after her family, when she began noticing unusual changes to her body.

She initially attributed the symptoms to her dramatic weight loss and exercise routine.

However, after developing increasingly uncomfortable stomach pains, Sammy was taken to hospital, where she made an extraordinary discovery.

Within hours, she had welcomed a baby boy named Noah.

Speaking on ITV's This Morning on October 21, 2026, Sammy and her partner Triston explained how the unexpected arrival had transformed their lives.

How did Sammy Evans give birth without knowing she was pregnant?

Sammy experienced what is known as a cryptic pregnancy, a situation in which someone remains unaware they are pregnant until late in the pregnancy or, in rare cases, until labour begins.

She had mistaken several of her pregnancy symptoms for the effects of losing weight, exercising and possible menstrual discomfort.

Sammy had lost approximately 10 stone and was regularly attending the gym, where she had begun doing more abdominal exercises with a personal trainer.

When she noticed a lump around her stomach, she assumed it was connected to the changes in her body.

She also had not experienced a period for some time, but believed this was related to her significant weight loss.

Even when she visited her doctor, the results of an initial pregnancy test were unclear.

It was only after she developed severe pain and went to hospital that she discovered she was pregnant and already in labour.

The discovery left Sammy and her partner with almost no time to prepare for their baby's arrival.

What symptoms did Sammy experience before giving birth?

Sammy explained that she had been experiencing several symptoms that made her feel something was not quite right.

She described feeling heavy and uncomfortable in her lower body, as well as noticing a strange sensation that she struggled to explain.

Concerned about the changes, she initially arranged a cervical screening appointment to rule out potential problems.

She said the results did not identify anything concerning.

However, the symptoms persisted, eventually prompting her to return to her doctor.

Sammy also noticed a long lump around her stomach and ribs.

Unlike the rounded pregnancy bump she had expected from her previous experience of motherhood, the swelling appeared unusually shaped.

She described it as resembling a tyre around her middle.

Because she had recently increased the amount of abdominal exercise she was doing, she assumed her workouts were responsible.

She told This Morning that she had even wondered whether the exercises had made the appearance of her stomach worse.

Why didn't Sammy realise she was pregnant?

Several factors contributed to Sammy not recognising the pregnancy.

One was her significant weight loss, which she believed explained why her menstrual periods had stopped.

She also did not have the obvious rounded bump she associated with pregnancy.

Instead, the changes in her abdomen appeared different from what she expected.

Sammy had already experienced motherhood, but that did not mean she recognised the symptoms of this pregnancy.

According to her account, she continued exercising and going about her usual activities without suspecting she was carrying a baby.

She and Triston also had no plans to have another child.

Sammy already had a 10-year-old, while Triston had a 16-year-old.

With their family circumstances and her unusual symptoms, pregnancy was not something she expected.

Did Sammy take a pregnancy test?

Yes. Sammy underwent a pregnancy test when she returned to her doctor for further investigations.

She explained that doctors also tested her for a urinary tract infection, commonly known as a UTI.

The UTI test came back positive.

Meanwhile, the pregnancy test was initially interpreted as negative, although Sammy recalled that there was a very faint positive line.

She told This Morning that medical staff had explained they would expect a much stronger positive result if she were as far along in pregnancy as the dates suggested.

As a result, the possibility of an advanced pregnancy was not established at that appointment.

Sammy returned home and began taking antibiotics for the UTI.

She even attended her usual water aerobics class.

It is important to note that a faint line on a pregnancy test can indicate pregnancy, depending on the test and when the result is read. Unexpected or conflicting results should be followed up with a healthcare professional.

What happened when Sammy went to hospital?

Later that night, Sammy was woken by stomach pains.

She initially believed the discomfort was connected to her menstrual cycle.

However, as the pain continued, she became increasingly concerned.

Her father drove her to hospital so doctors could investigate.

It was there that Sammy discovered she was pregnant.

Even after learning the news, she initially assumed she might still have several months before giving birth.

But the pain intensified, and medical staff informed her that she was actually in labour.

Within hours, she gave birth to a baby boy.

The sudden delivery meant there had been no opportunity for the family to prepare in the usual way.

What did Sammy say after giving birth to baby Noah?

Sammy explained that the experience was so unexpected and physically demanding that she struggled to process what had happened immediately after the birth.

Speaking to presenters Cat Deeley and Ben Shephard, she described continuing to experience significant pain after delivering Noah.

She also required stitches following the birth.

Because she was still dealing with the physical effects of labour, she said she did not immediately have a chance to take in the fact that she had become a mother again.

Her friends and relatives were equally stunned.

According to Sammy, many found it difficult to understand how she could have been pregnant for so long without realising.

Her friends have since begun organising a baby shower to celebrate Noah's arrival.

What is a cryptic pregnancy?

A cryptic pregnancy, sometimes called a stealth pregnancy, occurs when someone does not recognise that they are pregnant for an unusually long period.

In some cases, the pregnancy is discovered after several months.

In rarer circumstances, the person does not realise they are pregnant until labour begins.

Although pregnancy is commonly associated with symptoms such as morning sickness, missed periods, breast tenderness and an expanding abdomen, experiences vary significantly.

Some people have relatively few noticeable symptoms.

Others may experience symptoms but attribute them to unrelated conditions or lifestyle changes.

A lack of obvious pregnancy symptoms does not mean a pregnancy is medically undetectable.

How common is it to give birth without knowing you're pregnant?

Dr Sara Kaya, speaking on This Morning, explained that cryptic pregnancies are uncommon but do occur.

She cited estimates suggesting that:

These figures demonstrate that while discovering a pregnancy during labour is rare, it is a recognised medical phenomenon.

Many people experiencing a cryptic pregnancy may have symptoms that appear mild, unusual or consistent with another explanation.

Why do some women not develop an obvious baby bump?

Dr Kaya explained that the appearance of a pregnant abdomen can vary depending on several physical factors.

These may include the shape of a person's torso, abdominal muscle strength and the position of the pelvis and uterus.

Such differences can influence how prominently a pregnancy appears from the outside.

Some pregnant people may therefore develop a less noticeable bump than others, particularly earlier in pregnancy.

However, the absence of a prominent bump alone cannot confirm or rule out pregnancy.

Medical testing and examination are needed to establish whether someone is pregnant.

Can weight loss affect your periods?

Significant weight loss can affect the menstrual cycle.

Changes in body weight, nutritional intake and physical activity can influence the hormones responsible for regulating periods.

For some people, substantial weight loss or intense exercise can contribute to irregular or absent menstruation.

However, missed periods can also be a sign of pregnancy, and the absence of menstruation should not automatically be attributed to weight changes.

Anyone experiencing unexplained changes to their menstrual cycle should consider seeking medical advice.

In Sammy's case, she believed her weight loss explained why she had not been having periods, which contributed to her not suspecting pregnancy.

How has the surprise birth changed Sammy's family?

Sammy and Triston were not expecting to have another child.

Both already had children from their family lives, and the arrival of Noah came without the months of planning that typically precede a birth.

Nevertheless, the couple appeared together on This Morning with their newborn to share the extraordinary story.

Sammy's friends and relatives have been left amazed by the circumstances, with a baby shower now being planned after Noah's arrival rather than before it.

Her experience has drawn attention to cryptic pregnancies and the importance of investigating persistent or unexplained symptoms.

For Sammy, what began as a concern about a mysterious lump turned into an unexpected new chapter of motherhood.
