Tayla Kavanagh has spoken publicly about being tripped during the Hollywoodbets Durban 10K, an incident that cost her a shot at a national record despite going on to win the race.

A dramatic moment mid-race

Kavanagh, who has battled through serious injuries over the past two years, was tripped by a fellow runner around the 3km mark, sending her to the pavement while the other athlete continued on. Footage of the moment quickly circulated online, with viewers split over whether the trip was accidental or whether Kavanagh herself had cut into the runner's path.

What Kavanagh said afterwards

Speaking at a post-race press conference, Kavanagh admitted the moment left her furious in the immediate aftermath, saying it caught her off guard but that she's always told herself to get back up and keep going no matter what happens. She described quickly refocusing after the fall, telling herself to recollect herself and push on using the adrenaline from the moment.

Despite the incident costing her a shot at breaking Glenrose Xaba's South African 10km record, Kavanagh said she still considered it a good run overall, and that she respects the record enough to wait for the right day to properly go after it. She added that having her name next to the record is still something she wants, and that patience is part of the process.

She also said winning her own club's race held special meaning to her, calling it something she'd always wanted to achieve.

Setting a new course record

Despite the fall, Kavanagh still won the race outright and set a new course record of 31:39. The runner responsible for the trip has not been publicly identified, and reaction online has remained divided over who was at fault based on footage of the incident.
