A woman who worked aboard a nude cruise carrying approximately 2,000 passengers has revealed the unusual advice given to male guests who find themselves in an awkward situation.
While the idea of thousands of people holidaying together without clothes might sound unusual to some, organisers insist that the experience is about freedom and relaxation rather than anything sexual.
In fact, passengers are expected to follow a surprisingly strict set of rules designed to keep everyone comfortable.
And one particular rule addresses a situation that many people might immediately wonder about.
What happens if someone gets aroused on a nude cruise?
Kat Whitmire, an organiser with nude-cruise company Bare Necessities, explained how staff handle situations involving male passengers who become visibly aroused.
Speaking to Business Insider, Whitmire revealed that the advice is refreshingly straightforward.
Men are encouraged to jump into cold water or distract themselves by thinking about baseball.
The suggestion is intended to help passengers manage an involuntary physical reaction discreetly and avoid making other guests uncomfortable.
According to Whitmire, the cruises operate under a strictly non-sexual policy, meaning nudity is permitted but overt sexual behaviour is not.
For those unfamiliar with naturism, the distinction may be surprising.
However, organisers emphasise that being naked around other people does not automatically create a sexual environment.
Former passenger explains what actually happens on board
Despite the concerns some people might have about thousands of naked holidaymakers sharing a ship, one former passenger suggested that awkward incidents are relatively uncommon.
Writing on Reddit about his experience, the passenger explained that visible erections were rare because the atmosphere was not sexually charged.
He suggested that people unfamiliar with naturism tend to worry about such situations far more than those who regularly participate in clothing-optional activities.
The passenger also indicated that anyone experiencing an awkward moment would generally try to handle it discreetly rather than draw attention to themselves.
That attitude reflects the broader approach taken by organisers, who aim to create a respectful environment where guests can relax without feeling uncomfortable.
The strict rules passengers must follow on nude cruises
Although clothing is optional in many areas of the ship, that does not mean passengers can do whatever they please.
One important rule concerns photography.
Guests are expected to obtain permission before taking pictures that include other passengers, helping protect privacy and prevent unwanted photographs.
There are also restrictions on where people can remain completely naked.
For example, passengers must cover certain parts of their bodies when entering the formal dining room.
Whitmire explained that the requirement is partly practical, as staff regularly carry trays containing hot food and drinks.
Having exposed skin near potentially hot spills could create an unnecessary safety risk.
As a result, passengers are expected to dress appropriately in designated dining areas, even though they may spend much of the rest of their holiday without clothing.
How Kat Whitmire became involved in nude cruises
Whitmire's involvement with Bare Necessities began when she and her husband were invited to work as models after being approached by a friend who was a photographer.
The couple subsequently returned to work in general staff roles, giving them greater insight into the day-to-day operation of the cruises.
In 2010, Whitmire became a sales associate before eventually progressing into a full-time cruise-organising position.
Her experience has allowed her to observe how large groups of naturists interact while sharing the same holiday environment.
For Whitmire and the organisers, the emphasis is on making passengers feel comfortable while ensuring that everyone respects the boundaries of others.
And although the advice about cold water and baseball might raise a few smiles, it highlights how seriously the company takes maintaining a non-sexual atmosphere.
Ultimately, the message is simple: passengers may leave their clothes behind, but the usual expectations around respect, privacy and appropriate behaviour still apply.
