Netflix's Death of the Pastor's Wife has racked up more than 19 million views since its release on 26 August, sparking widespread debate and prompting renewed calls for accountability in the death of Mica Miller.
Why questions are being asked
Mica, 30, wife of Myrtle Beach pastor John-Paul Miller, was found dead at Lumber River State Park in North Carolina on 27 April 2024. Her death appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound, but has drawn ongoing suspicion given the circumstances surrounding it. She had filed for divorce just days before her death, and friends and family reported she had expressed fear for her safety in the period leading up to it. The documentary revisits this timeline in detail across three episodes, drawing on testimony from those close to her, and it's this combination of the timing of her divorce filing, her reported fears, and the unresolved circumstances of her death that has fuelled renewed public scrutiny since the series aired.
The legal case against John-Paul
John-Paul was indicted on federal charges in December 2025, including cyberstalking and making false statements to investigators. He has pleaded not guilty, with his trial currently scheduled for October. He has not been charged in connection with Mica's death itself.
Protesters confronting the church
According to ABC News, protesters have begun confronting John-Paul directly at Mercy Church since the documentary's release. Protester Melissa Caison told the outlet: "We just want the truth. We want justice for her. We just... we want there to be accountability." Mercy Church did not respond to a request for comment.
