Amy Schumer has responded to comments from her Trainwreck co-star John Cena about their time working together on the 2015 comedy, after he opened up about how awkward the experience actually was behind the scenes.
Cena's side of the story
Speaking on Shannon Sharpe's Club Shay Shay podcast in 2024, Cena recalled how the tone of one of the film's key scenes changed once cameras started rolling, with much of his planned dialogue scrapped in favour of an exaggerated, comedic approach instead. He described the whole process as far from intimate, given how many crew members are involved in filming something like that, and said he was essentially directed to make the moment look as awkward as possible for comic effect.
Schumer's playful response
After the podcast episode came out, Schumer responded on Instagram in typically comedic fashion, mock-offended that Cena would describe their scene together that way and joking that it had meant a great deal to her.
She'd previously spoken about the experience herself while promoting the film, joking to MTV Australia that Cena was, in her words, "actually inside me" during filming, and describing him jokingly as "a whole universe" and comparing the physical experience to "having a refrigerator" on top of her.
She also joked at the time that the scene had likely been more physically demanding for Cena than for her, and that her only regret was not getting to interact with more of his body during the shoot, in comments made alongside co-star Bill Hader, who added his own tongue-in-cheek remark about wrestlers not faking things.
