Jennifer Lawrence has addressed long-standing rumours that she had an affair with Chris Pratt, which began circulating after his split from then-wife Anna Faris in 2017.
What Jennifer Lawrence said
Speaking to KISS FM while promoting her 2018 film Red Sparrow, Lawrence laughed off the speculation, saying: "I never had an affair with Chris Pratt on Passengers. That's a good one... I mean they got a divorce like two years later and everybody was like [shouting] Jennifer Lawrence! And I was like what the... what I'm in Montreal two years later." She also joked about a separate occasion when she was rumoured to be secretly dating Brad Pitt, saying: "It was super flattering but at one point I was just like 'dating Brad Pitt'. We were having like 'secret rendezvous'. You know that was weird."
Where the rumours began
Speculation first started in 2016 while Lawrence and Pratt were filming their sci-fi film Passengers together, after paparazzi photos of the pair laughing on set fuelled tabloid stories, despite Pratt being in a long-term relationship at the time. Pratt and Faris announced their separation in August 2017, after eight years of marriage.
How the rumours affected Anna Faris
In her memoir, Unqualified, Faris described being warned in advance by her publicist that paparazzi coverage and rumours were likely to follow. She wrote that although she knew the stories were false, they still affected her, saying she'd always taken pride in her relationship and that the coverage made her feel insecure. She said she eventually spoke to Pratt about how hurtful the situation felt, and that he came to understand her perspective.
Faris was clear that she never blamed Lawrence for the rumours, writing that the two women remained friendly and that Lawrence had apologised despite having done nothing wrong. She described the experience as embarrassing and hurtful regardless of the rumours being untrue, saying it still left her feeling foolish.
Faris and Pratt's relationship today
Despite their divorce, Faris and Pratt have remained close, with Pratt writing the foreword for her memoir. Speaking on Live! With Kelly and Ryan, Faris said: "We're great and he's amazing. It was so kind of him to do that. We're great friends and always will be." She added elsewhere that the pair continue to share laughter and mutual pride in one another's lives.
