Lady Gaga has welcomed her first child, after being photographed walking with fiancé Michael Polansky and their newborn in Northern California. The news came as a surprise to many fans, since the couple never made any public pregnancy, surrogacy, or adoption announcement. Looking back, though, there were several signs hinting at it.
She'd already spoken about how she'd raise her kids
Speaking to ELLE in January 2025, Gaga said she wanted her children to form their own understanding of her artistry, saying: "I would want my children to understand that whatever my artistry means to them is totally up to them." She added that she'd never want to shape or influence how they thought about her.
She said becoming a mother was her next goal
During an appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert in October last year, Gaga described motherhood as her next major ambition, saying: "I would like to do many things. All of these things are open. But what I really want is to be a mom. That's my next starring role, I hope."
The couple had already discussed marriage and family plans
Speaking to Rolling Stone the same year, Polansky revealed the pair had discussed marrying during a break in Gaga's Mayhem Tour, saying: "We're talking about it all the time." He said they didn't want a large wedding, and referenced Gaga's godchildren, Elton John and David Furnish's sons, while describing their approach to raising children around fame, saying: "The most important thing is making it feel like this is just our family, this is what we do."
Her public appearances slowed dramatically
According to the Daily Mail, Gaga had been keeping a low profile in Marin County, California, as she and Polansky built a quieter life together. She was notably absent from the 2026 Met Gala, last appearing publicly at the New York premiere of The Devil Wears Prada 2 in April, shortly after her Mayhem Ball tour concluded. Her social media activity also slowed significantly, with a set of polaroid photos in August marking her first posts in months.
Fans speculated she'd secretly eloped
Before the baby news broke, a separate Daily Mail report speculated Gaga may have quietly married Polansky, after sources claimed she'd been unreachable for weeks. One source told the outlet: "No one has seen her or heard from her in over a month. Everyone in her circle thinks she eloped with Michael and is on her honeymoon now, trying to make a baby."
