Louisa Peck has shared her account of what she experienced after being pronounced clinically dead for three minutes following a heart attack in 1982, describing an encounter she says has stayed with her ever since. It's worth noting upfront that this is one individual's personal recollection rather than anything scientifically verified, and near-death experiences like this remain a subject of genuine debate among researchers.
What happened to her
Peck had a heart attack at a nightclub in New York after inadvertently overdosing on cocaine that had been cut with lidocaine, an anaesthetic. She was resuscitated after being clinically dead for a short period.
What she says she experienced
Speaking in an interview with Coming Home, Peck described a vivid, dreamlike sequence in which she saw an ocean beneath her and dove toward it without fear, eventually arriving at what she described as a weathered old house she instinctively understood to belong to her ancestors. She said she felt the presence of relatives, including grandparents and a grandfather who had died before she was born, describing them as excited and happy to greet her, though she couldn't see them, only sense their presence.
Peck said she'd had little interest in genealogy in her everyday life, but described feeling honoured to be following in her ancestors' footsteps during the experience. She recalled expecting to find an armchair facing a large window overlooking the ocean, and feeling disappointed when it wasn't there, before something took hold of her and pulled her toward the window, ultimately guiding her out over it, a moment she described as delightful.
Life after the experience
Peck regained consciousness after CPR was administered, and has said the experience left a lasting impact on her, claiming she has continued to see ghosts in the years since.
