A year after Netflix released Amy Bradley Is Missing, true crime author James Renner has claimed the documentary left out a significant detail relating to one of its central theories, involving photos the Bradley family received suggesting Amy had been found alive.
Background on the case
Amy Bradley disappeared from a Royal Caribbean cruise ship in March 1998. She was last seen on the balcony of her family's cabin in the early hours of the morning after spending the evening in the ship's club. The case has never been solved. In 2005, the Bradley family received anonymous photos appearing to show Amy, under a different name, on a Caribbean-based adult website advertising sex workers. The documentary stated that FBI analysis had concluded the woman in the photos was Amy, though the site's IP address couldn't be traced, and nothing further came of the lead at the time.
What the author claims was left out
Renner, who wrote A Cruise to Nowhere: My Search for Amy Lynn Bradley, told LADbible that additional photos of the woman in question, referred to as "Jas," were not included in the documentary, and that these photos clearly show she doesn't have the same tattoos as Amy Bradley. He said both he and the Bradley family do not believe the woman in the photos is Amy.
Renner also disputed the documentary's framing of the FBI's involvement, saying the series gave viewers the impression that the FBI had officially concluded the photo was Amy, which he says isn't accurate. According to Renner, the assessment came from a forensic analyst who was not a current or working FBI agent, and the FBI itself has never made that determination.
He also pushed back on the broader theory that Amy had been trafficked from the ship, arguing there's no verified case of a woman being kidnapped from a cruise ship and forced into sex trafficking in the Caribbean, and that human trafficking in the region overwhelmingly affects women from lower-income countries rather than tourists.
Conflicting claims since the documentary aired
Despite Renner's claims, some viewers online have argued the opposite, with one Reddit user claiming to have found separate photos of "Jas" that do appear to show tattoos similar to Amy's, partially concealed with makeup. Separately, a man has come forward claiming he paid for sex from a woman he believes was Amy, describing her tattoos in detail, a claim the Bradley family was reportedly attempting to follow up on.
