Charlotte County Sheriff Bill Prummell has made a candid personal admission about the arrest of Malia Nummerdor, the Florida mother charged with engaging in sexual contact with the family dog after her estranged husband Erik provided hidden camera footage to police.
Nummerdor, 38, was arrested on September 15 in Punta Gorda after Erik reported the alleged incident to police, claiming to have photo and video evidence. He told investigators he had installed two security cameras inside the family home to find out who was stealing money from a coin jar, and discovered the footage of his wife and the dog while reviewing the recordings.
Nummerdor denied any sexual contact during police questioning, saying she had simply been petting the animal. Officers noted she appeared impaired during the interview and that her answers were contradictory, as she was unable to explain certain actions shown in the footage. She has counter-alleged that Erik installed the cameras without her knowledge, accessed her social media accounts to post the material publicly, and had previously threatened her with the recordings, which she claims date from 2024.
Sheriff Prummell addressed the case publicly and made a striking admission about its personal impact on him.
"There are only a few times in my career that I have been at a loss for words," he said. "This is one of those times. I simply cannot comprehend this behavior. No animal should ever be subjected to this kind of conduct, and you can be sure that we will take action when we learn about it here in Charlotte County."
He then specifically addressed Nummerdor's smiling mugshot, which has drawn widespread attention online.
"And then to smile in the mugshot?" he said. "I don't know what there is to smile about when you've been arrested for something as disgusting as this."
Nummerdor remains in custody at Charlotte County Jail with bond set at $35,000. The Facebook page her husband created to share his allegations remains public and has continued to be updated since her arrest.
