An experienced animal keeper has offered a surprising explanation for the behaviour of a tiger involved in the tragic death of a man at Yorkshire Wildlife Park.
The incident happened on Saturday, October 10, when a man entered an enclosure housing Amur tigers at the popular attraction in Doncaster.
Emergency services rushed to the scene following reports of an attack, but despite efforts to save him, the man was pronounced dead.
As questions continue surrounding the tragedy, an animal expert has suggested the tiger's behaviour may not have been what many people initially assumed.
What happened at Yorkshire Wildlife Park?
South Yorkshire Police confirmed that officers received reports of a man entering the tiger enclosure at approximately 1.35pm on Saturday.
Footage circulating online appears to show a tiger named Altai interacting with the man inside the habitat.
Another recording reportedly captures the man asking visitors to take photographs of him with the animal shortly before the incident.
The man's identity has not been publicly confirmed, and police are continuing their investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death.
Animal keeper offers unexpected explanation
Speaking to Sky News, animal keeper Reece Oliver suggested that Altai may initially have been playing rather than deliberately attempting to kill the man.
Oliver explained that a tiger weighing approximately 200kg would be capable of inflicting fatal injuries extremely quickly if it launched a determined attack.
He suggested the animal may have been confused by the unexpected presence of a person inside its enclosure.
Ordinarily, Oliver explained, objects entering a tiger's habitat would be associated with food or enrichment activities.
As a result, he believes Altai may have approached the man with curiosity, using natural predatory instincts to investigate something unfamiliar.
Unfortunately, even behaviour that begins as exploration or play can become extremely dangerous when an animal of that size and strength is involved.
Oliver's comments represent his interpretation of the incident rather than an officially established explanation of the tiger's behaviour.
What will happen to Altai?
Following widespread concern about the animal's future, Yorkshire Wildlife Park confirmed that Altai would not be euthanised.
In a statement shared on social media, the attraction reassured members of the public that the tiger was safe and well.
Management also acknowledged the devastating impact of the incident on staff, confirming that employees affected by the tragedy were receiving specialist support.
The park expressed its sympathies to the victim's family and loved ones.
When will Yorkshire Wildlife Park reopen?
The attraction was evacuated immediately following Saturday's incident and remained closed throughout Sunday.
Although there had initially been expectations that the park might reopen on Monday, October 12, management subsequently informed ticket holders that it would remain closed for the entire day.
The closure allows investigations to continue and provides additional time for staff to receive support.
It remains unclear whether the Land of the Tigers enclosure will reopen alongside the rest of the attraction.
The purpose-built habitat opened in 2011 and covers approximately two acres, with elevated walkways allowing visitors to observe the animals from a safe distance.
For now, the investigation continues as authorities work to establish exactly how the tragedy unfolded.
