A theory has emerged over the deaths of Thomasina Tobin, 51, and her husband Patrick Tobin, 48, who were found unresponsive in an outdoor hot tub at a rental property in Cullera, Spain, on 25 August.
What happened
The couple's bodies were reportedly discovered by their two teenage children, aged 14 and 16, who alerted neighbours before police were contacted. Relatives have since travelled to Spain to support the children. Thomasina, originally from Castleblayney and daughter of Irish playwright Tommy McArdle, had lived in London for 20 years and worked as a chartered surveyor. Patrick, from New Zealand, worked as an associate general manager at HCLTech. Both companies have issued statements expressing condolences to the family.
The leading theory
Investigators believe the couple may have become physically trapped in the hot tub and suffered cardiac arrest after exhausting themselves trying to escape. According to Spanish newspaper Las Provincias, preliminary autopsy findings point toward accidental entrapment, with the excessive suction force of the tub's hydro massage system potentially causing the couple to become caught, leading to extreme physical exertion and cardiac arrest brought on by the resulting stress.
Spain's Guardia Civil has brought in industry experts to examine the hot tub's equipment, including its suction fittings and power system, as part of the investigation.
Other findings and ruled-out explanations
Homicide detectives were initially involved after marks and scratches were found on both bodies, but foul play has since been ruled out, with investigators suggesting the injuries may have resulted from the couple trying to free themselves or each other. A separate theory involving a possible electrical fault has also been considered, in which one partner may have been electrocuted before the other died attempting a rescue. Neither theory has been officially confirmed.
Official response
Ireland's Department of Foreign Affairs confirmed it is providing consular assistance to the family, though it declined to comment further on the specifics of the case, as is standard practice.
