Dame Judi Dench has revealed how she would ideally like to spend her final moments, sharing an unusually specific wish that reflects her lifelong love of acting.

The 91-year-old British actress, whose extraordinary career has spanned more than six decades, has become one of the most recognisable figures in film and theatre.

From her performances in Shakespeare in Love to her unforgettable portrayal of M in the James Bond franchise, Dench has entertained generations of audiences.

And despite her age, the Oscar-winning star has made it clear that she has little interest in slowing down simply because people expect her to.

In a recent interview, she opened up about ageing, retirement and the rather unconventional circumstances in which she would like her life to end.

Judi Dench reveals how she wants to die

Speaking to The Times, Dench explained that her ideal death would come in a theatre dressing room, immediately after delivering a performance.

She revealed that her inspiration came from the late actor Newton Blick, who reportedly died in his dressing room following a show.

For Dench, the idea of spending her final moments doing something she has loved throughout her life appears far more appealing than quietly retiring from the spotlight.

She also joked about wanting to be among the adventurous older women who continue throwing themselves out of aeroplanes at the age of 100.

Her comments reflected a determination to remain active and embrace life rather than allow her age to dictate what she can and cannot do.

Why Judi Dench refuses to retire

Although Dench has enjoyed an extraordinary career, she admitted that growing older comes with some frustrating assumptions.

One of her biggest irritations is being repeatedly asked whether she intends to retire.

The actress made it clear that she has no intention of stepping away from the profession simply because she has reached her nineties.

She even managed to find humour in the advantages of being an older performer, joking that theatres tend to provide dressing rooms closer to the stage.

Dench also admitted that she dislikes being described as a national treasure, believing the phrase makes her sound like an ageing historical object.

Actress has faced significant health challenges

Dench's determination to continue working is particularly remarkable given the difficulties she has experienced with her eyesight.

She was diagnosed with age-related macular degeneration in 2012, a condition that progressively affects central vision.

The actress has previously explained that her deteriorating sight makes reading scripts and recognising people on film sets increasingly difficult.

However, rather than allowing the condition to end her career, she has relied on friends to help her learn lines and prepare for performances.

Her refusal to give up acting has become an important part of her outlook on growing older.

Judi Dench also made surprising driving confession

In her memoir, Is It Too Late to Make a Run for It?, Dench revealed another unexpected detail about her younger years.

She admitted that she had driven for approximately 30 years without obtaining a full driving licence.

According to the actress, she was eventually stopped by police near Parliament Square in London and discovered to be driving with only a provisional licence.

She was fined £2 following the incident and finally obtained her full licence at the age of 50.

Between her humorous confessions and her refusal to embrace retirement, Dench continues to demonstrate the independent spirit that has defined much of her career.

And her latest comments suggest that, given the choice, she would rather spend her final days doing what she loves than watching life pass her by.
