Christina Applegate has revealed the reason behind a decision that left a young Brad Pitt stranded and distraught at the 1989 MTV Video Music Awards, detailed in her new memoir, You With the Sad Eyes.
What happened that night
Applegate, then 17, attended the ceremony with Pitt, 26 at the time, as her date, with Pitt even arranging to drive her mother, actress Nancy Priddy, to the event. Rather than leaving with Pitt as planned, Applegate left the ceremony with Skid Row frontman Sebastian Bach instead, after taking a liking to him during the night. Pitt was left to drive Applegate's mother home alone, and was reportedly offended by the situation, holding a grudge for years afterward.
Why she regretted the decision
Applegate later discovered that Bach already had a partner and young child at the time, leaving her regretting her choice almost immediately. She and Pitt reportedly weren't on speaking terms for a long period following the incident, though they eventually reconciled, agreeing she had simply been young and caught up in the moment. Reflecting on how their paths diverged since, she quipped: "Of course, Brad is now THE Brad Pitt, and Sebastian Bach... well, he still has long hair, I guess."
Other revelations in her memoir
Applegate also reflected candidly on her 2001 marriage to actor Johnathon Schaech, recalling a moment of doubt on her wedding day itself, saying: "The worst thing was the moment I walked around the corner and into the ceremony. One of my favourite songs was playing, and when I looked hard at the face of my husband-to-be, I thought, 'Oh f**k. F**k, oh f**k.' And I knew right then that this was not the man for me." Elsewhere in the book, she discusses her long-standing struggles with body image, revealing that despite being widely regarded as a beauty icon, she said she "still couldn't be convinced" that she was "an attractive person."
